Following our feature on Farid Khayyer, we’re proud to continue our The Groundbreakers series with Andrew Kiesel, an Associate Geotechnical and Pavements Engineer with 12 years of experience with new and rehabilitation pavement design.
Andrew is passionate about coming up with easy-to-construct designs with materials that help speed up the delivery of the project. When collaborating as a team, Andrew mixes it up to ensure he’s proactively challenging designs to ensure the best balance for the overall project.
Embedding Sustainability
The field of pavement rehabilitation requires sustainability considerations, and Andrew embeds sustainability by maximising the inclusion of recycled materials. He also ensures the designs will utilise existing materials – a consideration for both new and rehabilitated pavements.
Developing Innovative Designs
Andrew is proud of his work on the Eastern Freeway upgrade, spanning from Burke Road to Tram Road. As the lead pavement designer for the eastern section of the southern package, he collaborated closely with the wider project team to ensure its success.
Andrew developed innovative flexible and rigid pavement designs for areas with varying traffic levels, ranging from lightly trafficked council roads to heavy trafficked state freeways. He also created rehabilitation designs for both arterial and freeway roads.
The Future of Pavements
Looking at emerging trends, Andrew is anticipating a rise in the use of bio-bitumen, a sustainable alternative to traditional asphalt made from waste materials and other natural products.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the replacement of standard bitumen products with bio-bitumen alternatives will shape the next generation of roads as the reliance on crude oil is reduced in the industry,” Andrew says.
