Shaping New Zealand’s Solar Future: Kōwhai Park Solar Farm
Tonkin + Taylor has been part of developing what will be one of New Zealand’s largest solar farms, Kōwhai Park, located in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Set on a vast 230-hectare site adjacent to Christchurch International Airport’s campus, this $273 million project is set to commence construction in late 2024. Once completed, the 168MWp solar farm will generate approximately 275GWh annually, enough to power around 36,000 homes.
Hannah Tiong’s Solar Start in Engineering
Our team’s involvement in this project has been both challenging and rewarding. Hannah Tiong, Geotechnical Engineer at Tonkin + Taylor, has spent 450 hours working on the project:
“As a recent graduate, I began my professional journey with the Kōwhai Solar Farm project, conducting geotechnical investigations across a sweeping 230 hectares. The early frosty mornings were offset by the breathtaking sunrises. Each day was punctuated by the inspiring sight of the A380s touching down every afternoon and the occasional interaction with our curious sheep.”
“Onsite, our local excavator operator, Joe, always had a story up his sleeve, accompanying his extensive knowledge of wine. Furthermore, Jeremy from Geotechnics patiently guided me through the process of driving a manual vehicle. This project allowed me to develop numerous technical skills, including soil logging, creating Leapfrog ground models, and understanding CAD. Seeing the project details on the airport walls served as a daily reminder of the tangible, significant impact of our work.
I feel honoured to have been involved in such a pioneering project from its inception. I eagerly anticipate witnessing its future growth and development and feel inspired by the sector-wide implications it carries.”
Renewable Energy Goals
Expected to be operational by Q2 2026, Kōwhai Park will play a vital role in supporting New Zealand’s renewable energy goals.
The benefits of solar power are undeniable, this is a fast-growing renewable energy source, offering cost-competitive, versatile, and environmentally friendly solutions. Solar power produces CO2-free electricity, is quick to deploy, operates quietly, and can boost local biodiversity.
As we move forward, Tonkin + Taylor is committed to fostering decarbonisation efforts, and this project creates a green energy hub that will drive economic growth in the region. We remain dedicated to pioneering innovative solutions that advance our energy infrastructure to create and sustain a better world.
