Ground improvement techniques undertaken for the road embankments on soft soil for the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway

New Zealand Geomechanics News Issue 106 December 2023 p. 50-60

The Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway (PP2Ō) is a 13 km long, 4-lane expressway located on the Kāpiti Coast north of Wellington, New Zealand, serving as a replacement for the existing State Highway 1 (SH1). To the south, it connects with the MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway, and its northern extension reaches beyond the Taylors Road intersection on the current SH1. The presence of soft soils is a consequence of topographical and geological factors which has resulted in poorly drained conditions.
This paper provides an overview of the ground improvement techniques implemented to address geotechnical challenges associated with these soft soils, and the observational approach adopted during the construction phase.
