Tonkin + Taylor’s coastal team comprises New Zealand’s leading and award-winning coastal scientists and engineers providing all-encompassing solutions for complex challenges in the coastal marine area.

Using cutting edge data collection techniques, science and theory along with numerical models, geospatial tools and engineering we provide expert services in coastal hazards, coastal adaptation, coastal engineering, marine infrastructure and effects assessments.

We take pride in our work and are committed to preserving and enhancing the coastal zone. We have a proven track record of delivering resilient, environmentally sensitive and adaptive solutions to meet client and communities needs in a sustainable way.

Services

We undertake coastal hazard and risk assessments at national, regional, and local scale to map exposure to, and consequences of, coastal erosion, inundation, and tsunami over varying timescales. This allows for informed decision making for communities and public assets at the coast.
We evaluate coastal hazard risks and use adaptive planning methods to allow communities to prepare for and manage risk for potential future climate change scenarios.
Where an existing asset is at risk from coastal hazards e.g. erosion, inundation or wave overtopping, or where a new asset is proposed for the coastal edge, protection measures may be required. Examples include revetments, seawalls, breakwaters, groynes and nature-based solutions such as protected planting and beach nourishment which we have the coastal engineering skills to design from concept through to detailed design. We focus on working with natural processes and draw on our in-house ecology and planning teams to provide resilience and enhance the coastal environment.
Marine facilities including wharves, ferry terminals, marinas, boat ramps and pontoons require a multi-disciplinary team. Our coastal team works closely with our civil, structural and geotechnical engineers as well as our ecologists to provide services covering condition assessments, repair and upgrade, as well as new build design services.
Using a range of tools and fit for purpose methods we assess coastal process and potential effects from proposed developments. These assessments either feed into the overall design process or they are standalone assessments to support resource consent applications. Our team of experts have a long track record of working closely with government, councils and private clients assessing and reducing effects and presenting evidence at hearings, hui, and cross examination at Environment Court.
